One of the standout features of the SG5 is its range of engine options. For the average driver, naturally aspirated 2.0L or 2.5L engines provided solid performance with excellent fuel economy. But for enthusiasts, the turbocharged versions—especially the 2.0L EJ20-equipped Forester XT and the JDM-only Forester STi—offered real excitement.
The SG5 Forester XT models came with Subaru’s renowned EJ20 or EJ255 turbo engines, which were closely related to those in the WRX. These turbocharged powerplants could be easily tuned to deliver impressive horsepower without compromising reliability, thanks to Subaru’s stout boxer engine architecture and symmetrical AWD system.
In particular, the JDM Forester STi stood out with its aggressive styling, STi-tuned suspension, Brembo brakes, and the iconic 6-speed manual transmission from the WRX STi.
